GP Practice Data Extraction

CDRIntell provides centralised storage of patient data extracted from the Practice Clinical System, which can be accessed securely by the Practice.

Data held in CDRIntell is securely stored in an Oracle database with a web-based secure front end enabling Practices to access their patient data via a web browser, e.g. MS Internet Explorer.

CDRIntell is updated, (with the Practice's agreement) every night with data taken from the Practice's clinical systems e.g. Torex, Emis etc.

Figure 1 illustrates how Practice data is extracted via the NHSnet/N3 into the Clinical Data Repository. Practices can then review their own patient data. A PCT can also view anonymised data or aggregate reports, however, this is only if the Practice has given explicit permission.

General Practice Agreements and Data Sharing Protocols
Practices will be presented with a number of documents, which will confirm the arrangements that will be established to support the data extraction and data sharing initiatives.

Transferring data from the GP Clinical systems into the CDRIntell
Data is transferred from the GP Clinical systems into the Central Repository via an extract process. Health Intelligence uses either a MIQUEST script or a system provided by Graphnet (to facilitate the secure automated extraction of data). Once the data extract has been installed, data is uploaded from the GP clinical system into CDRIntell each night.

Security of the Process
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption is adopted to ensure that any data transmitted is secure. Data is encrypted both on the workstation and during transmission. Additionally the data is sent from the Practice to CDRIntell directly via NHSnet/N3. Software security within the solution is multi-layered and extremely rigorous, ensuring that patient confidentiality is preserved at all times.

Reporting using CDRIntell
The data extracted from GP clinical systems is used to generate the Local Delivery Plan (LDP) Reports and other reports of interest to the Practice and PCT.
